(4.10) Photography!
There have been many VERY interesting photographs taken and uploaded recently by students to their Google Art Classrooms, so the art teachers decided that this would be the perfect time to offer you more opportunities to learn more about this art medium.

Photography: The word "photography" is created by two words: photo, which means "light" and "graphy" which means to "write, describe, draw, represent by lines drawn". So, photography means "to draw with light" Artists and inventors have explored the use of light as a drawing medium for a very long time. To the left, National Geographic shows the creation of, and visual effects of a Camera Obscura (meaning "dark room"). The first written record of a Camera Obscura was recorded 4th Century BCE. They still cause amazement today with the way that light can be used to create an outdoor scene inside a darkened room. |
Super Short Camera Recent History:
Cameras have gone through a HUGE change very recently. When your grandparents were young adults, they most likely used film cameras.
The first affordable digital camera as a "stand alone camera for consumers" was available in 1995.
Many people at that time also still used analogue (film) cameras.
Digital Cameras became a part of phones around 2002
The first Apple iPhone was created in 2007. That is 13 years ago.
There was no such thing as a selfie or Instagram
Side note: The Instagram founders, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, founded the photo-sharing app in a co-working space in 2010.
It became a runaway success, attracting tens of millions of users before the co-founders sold it to Facebook (FB) in 2012 for $1 billion.
The first Apple iPad to also have a camera was invented in 2012. That is 8 years ago.
The cameras and software embedded in phones has enabled phones to take photos up to 12 megapixels - this increases their detail greatly from the original 2 megapixel cameras.
Star Wars Side Note and Special Effects:
To put this in a bigger perspective for you, Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope was filmed entirely with film. Special effects were all created by hand, by creative people like you, either using props, or by directly drawing on film post-production. There were no digital cameras, and no digital manipulation of the film possible. While many film makers still prefer using film, most special effects (SFX) are now created using digital media. How do YOU think those light sabers were made?
